Thou Shalt Not Covet

Most of us have heard the last of the Ten Commandments:  "Thou Shalt Not Covet."  The first nine commandments are generally regarded as external action commandments.  Don't murder, don't lie, etc.  But the tenth commandment is something altogether different.  "Thou shalt not covet" is about the inner being.  As we reflect on ourselves and we strive to know ourselves more, this tenth commandment is a painful one.

In all societies across all time, all humans covet.  We may covet money, power, love, attention, success, or acceptance.  Or we may covet peace, clean air, quiet kids, and fresh flowers.  When we do not have something, and we want it badly, we covet that object.

But, why is coveting so bad?  Why does it rise to the level of a Commandment.  Why is "covet" at the same level as "murder".  Well, to covet is to be discontent with what God has given you.  I certainly want that bigger house, nicer car, better vacation, but God has put me into the exact right circumstances for my evolution into the person he has designed me to become.  If having those things was part of the plan, then I would have those things.  But, God knows what is best and has provided me just what I need.

When I covet, I am showing frustration with what God has chosen not to give me.  In a sense, I am stomping my foot, and pouting because I want that candy that will rot my teeth.  If we comprehend that there is a God, and that God is all knowing, and that God has a plan for each of us, then we must concede that what we do not have, we are not meant to have.  To covet is to want something despite God's intention for us not to have it.

As we strive to know more about ourselves, take time to consider the inner self.  Think of the time and energy wasted on coveting.  Then consider a life where all that you covet is God himself, and God is there for you.  Strive to embrace what is there for you, instead of the worldly objects you are not intended to have.

I am a prime example of someone who covets many things.  I pray that I comprehend that God is enough.
