It seems that everyone is trying to find themselves. The shelves at the bookstores are full of books telling us to find something, find someone, or ignore everything. If we consider basic market forces, it stands to reason that all of these materials exist because there are many people who are struggling.
"Accepting yourself" is not about accepting who you are today, but understanding and accepting who you are designed to become. We are all intended to be on a journey of improvement. However, many of us have veered down destructive paths. If you are on such a destructive path, you are drifting further and further away from the person you are supposed to become.
Left to our own devices, we are destined to slide down the wrong paths. As humans we are simply not capable of avoiding the self-centeredness that generally results in a wandering spirit. The truth is that there is a natural order to things, and the more we are focused on ourselves, the more we run afoul of this natural order.
The natural order was set by God. Keep an open mind here. There is a right and wrong, there is a way nature should be, there is a way that we were designed. If you don't believe this, then that is your faith. But consider my faith for a moment.
The Bible gives us strong insight into who we are supposed to become. Very clearly, the Bible spells out that we are supposed to: (1) help others selflessly, (2) not boast or seek personal accolades for helping others, (3) give to those who need it the most, (4) avoid judging others, (5) love our neighbor, (6) love our enemies, and so forth.
The common thread is humility. We are designed to become humble. Humility allows us to serve others, love others, and be non-judgmental towards others. Humility is not just thinking of others, it is thinking of ourselves less. Humility allows for the many things that are desired in both political parties and within most socio-economic groups. Humility affords a more congenial and helping society. Those who are humble find joy, peace, and contentment. We cannot do it our own ... more on this in future posts!
